The thriving economics that characterizes Mumbai is built on the shoulders of its ancient and widespread unorganized/informal sector. An estimated 68% of Mumbai’s workforce is employed in the unorganized sector, with most belonging to lower income groups and many of who are homeless.
To address the troubles of homeless labourers, Pehchan has set up a labour helpline where people can call in for information and support on their issues. The major areas being addressed include wage related issues, harassment at the workplace and problems arising out of lack of documentation. The helpline was activated in May 2014 in the city of Mumbai and will increase its reach steadily.
